“Mimesis” contemplates the way we memorialize the act of presenting objects as pageantry and lure to represent a moment of desire. Israel and Hobbs amplify the absurdity of our culture’s obsession with objects by setting a hyper-real display under black light creating an illusion and deceptive appearances. In this installation, Hobbs and Israel illustrate the object’s power to create desire. Lacan states, “Objet petit a” is a fantasy that functions as the cause of desire; as such, it determines whether desire will be expressed within the limits of the pleasure principle or “beyond,”…” Besides reflecting the environment around the shed, the green tinsel’s covering the shed acts as to mirror or reflects the garden it also acts as a container or a phantasmagoria. Inside like a phantasmagoria, a series of projected images of green objects illuminates the interior of the shed. The video installation is saturated with green images of objects projected on the wall and the outer shed is covered with green reflective tinsels as if it’s ready to join a parade.
